Rather strange cross wiring thing you have to do to get it into canbus mode, but watched a couple of YouTube videos before it came so wasn’t so freaked out by the horrendous instructions.
You need a better brain than mine to understand all the flashing lights but I don’t care about so that as long as it charges my battery 😂

I found The charger lights a little daunting to follow at first but very quickly got the hang of it.

I've owned many bikes over the years and they've all been happy with an easy-connect lead wired directly to the battery for charging. This has meant that my old but reliable Ctek charger has been sufficient. However my purchase of the canbus-equipped RS last year straight away lead to charging issues with the above setup. Fine if you just charge the bike overnight and then disconnect but not ok for long periods of float charging between rides. So a purchase of a Canbus compatible charger was overdue and I've finally upgraded to the Optimate 4.5.
While the instructions initially seemed complicated for what the lights on the display mean, especially compared to the Ctek, once familiar with it I'm very happy. It has a really long cable so I've been able to mount the charger to hang down from the ceiling. I can ride in to the garage, lock the bike and then plug in the Optimate to the supplied port on the bike. The Canbus and charger connect and it goes through the cycle, finally ending up on float mode for as long as needed.
Honestly, I wish I'd bought this sooner and would recommend it to any other owners in a similar position.
Nippy Norman's were spot on as usual meaning I can easily leave a 5 star rating.

I have used an optimate charger on all my bikes for the last 25. Keeping you bike on a trickle charger extends the life of your battery and a wise investment given the cost of a new battery.
I have just bought my first ever BMW and needed a charger that suited the can-bus system. I love the fact I can simply plug the charger into the 12v socket rather than have to fiddle around with a connector under the seat or a side panel.
Every time I put the bike in the garage after a ride, simply plug it in which takes seconds and keep that battery in tip top condition.

Simple bit of kit but I agree with Glyn G below that the lights are confusing and the instructions about what the lights mean leaves a lot to the imagination.
Essentially, if it is connected correctly, and it tells you if it is not, don’t worry, it will do the right thing and salvage an old battery or it will charge and maintain your battery.
To change from crocodile clips to the canbus Din plug, you have to short the terminals which seems to be wrong. Just goes to show what the designer’s state of mind was in when making this!
Overall, I’m very happy with this and with Nippy Normans for the quick delivery.
I would have taken a star off for rubbish instructions but you really don’t need them.

My GSA has the datatool tracker fitted as standard and it caused horrendous battery drain - killed one battery. I have had the new optimate and it is great. The dealer recommended connecting it direct to the battery so I have done this. No issues now!

Not easy to connect directly to battery or onto starter solenoid terminal on nearside so using the Optimate 4.5 via the plug-in accessory socket is quick and simple. Connection via Can-Bus which the Optimate turns on automatically is quick and straightforward then just turn on the mains and the Optimate 4.5 does the rest. Only recently purchased from Nippy Norman but delighted and anticipate long life for battery and charger. Also good price and technical explanation as usual from NN.

Good charger. The only issue is that if you plug it into the canbus system accessory socket on the dash it interferes with a Bike Track tracker. While the charger is on it shows on the Bike Track app as the ignition on the bike is switched on and the tracker is not active. If you attached the charger to the battery the tracker app shows that the ignition is off and the battery is on charge, and the tracker is on.

It appears that the tracker has been wired incorrectly. The tracker’s trigger should be going to circuit which only goes live when the ignition is switched on, rather than to the circuit which goes live with the socket. Please check the wiring.

I bought this charger after I found out the branded BMW charger doesn't actually keep charging the bike as it shuts off the DC plug the charger goes in when the battery voltage goes up. The Optimate charger gets over this and is always charging the battery. As usual, excellent service from NN, and a quick despatch.

Works fine and more convenient that the battery connected system. Bought because I had problems with discharging and the old Optimate IV would only charge the battery if the battery was off the bike. Seems I had problems with the main computer detecting a low drain, which came from the radio. Took the main agent 1.5 hrs to trace. Classic bikes are so much easier.

The Can Bus version is a great charger which I am assured is safe to be connected whenever the bike isn't in use and especially after a short trip. This worked a treat by bringing the battery back to life.
I spent a bit of time trying to understand what the different stages the Optimate was in but going forward I'll just plug it in and let it do its job.
The free hook is handy to hang it from the bike and glad I bought this CAN BUS variant as it's so easy to use without having to go near the bikes battery.

This item is just fantastic
Plug and play literally, connect to your bike plug it in and it automatically reads your battery whatever the status it maintains or charges your battery to optimum condition.
Bought this to recover a battery I couldn’t get to start my bike or charge using a standard charger for my bike which I paid €120 for.
On recommendation from a fellow biker this charger not only recovered the battery but has maintained it perfectly since.
It can be left on the bike through the auxiliary plug in charger on your bike or connected directly to the battery via the accessory I also bought the Optimate all weather permanent SAE lead which I’d also recommend.
Safe biking and if your buying a charger this is the one. Price was also best out there from several biking sites across Europe with fee shipping.

This is my first GS fitted with the factory fitted tracker system. I usually park up my bikes at the end of September and run them every two months until the spring to change the battery. On trying to start the GS fitted with the tracker I found the battery was below 40% and would not turn the engine. I contacted my Motorrad dealer as my GS is only 4 months old. Apparently the tracker system will drain the battery unless the bike is ran more frequently than a bike without one fitted. I can confirm this is the case as my previous two GS’s were no problem. On recommendation from my dealership I purchased the Optimate. As this is the CAN-bus edition it’s plug and play. There is no requirement to change the program. Battery was back to full power with 24 hrs. Excellent service from Nippy Norman’s as usual. Would recommend any BMW owner to buy this piece of kit. ESPECIALLY if your new bike is fitted with the tracker system. To all at NN compliments of the season and stay safe and well.

A great charger for the can bus bikes but be advised that it comes factory set in normal battery mode, not can bus mode. I found the instructions a little confusing and didn't pick up that you need to attach the crocodile clips chord, connect the clips together, then plug the charger into the mains and turn it on to switch the charger out of normal battery mode and into 'can bus' mode before you use it on your bike. I only picked that up after watching a couple of YouTube videos.
After switching modes the charger works brilliantly and the lead lengths are very generous. It's a bit of a cheek, though, to claim you're getting a free hook when you're being charged more than the same product without it.

Sublime service once again from NN. The charger is clearly a higher end item for my existing Oximiser, which I thought was broken but traced the fault to a dodgy connection. In any case this is a better option for the Beemer, far superior wiring and connections , and I have now rigged up my Blade ( No 2 Bike) to accept the same connections. This smart charger, I am sure will prolong the life of the battery. Unreservedly recommended

The instructions are woeful. Charger is simple to set up - but it was a case of plug into the CAN controlled power socket and hope! Eventually green lights seem to indicate everything working OK. It was then a case of re-reading the instructions several times to make sense of what was happening. 4 stars because the charger seems to work OK and is well-built - for 5 stars, those instructions need to make logical sense!

I had not used my bijke for 4 months over winter and the battery was dead. The Optimate recovered the battery successfully and it now spins the bike over easily with no issues. Saved me buying a new battery.
Only negative is that I didn't receive the free hook for hanging it on the bars. I didn't complain as I wasn't overly concerned.

I've had an Optimate for years (old version), but haven't used it with My GS. When my bike battery recently showed signs of getting a bit 'tired' I decided to 'upgrade' to the newer CAN Bus Optimate so I can use the DIN socket for simplicity. I've always found Optimates to be dead simple when your battery is good and healthy, but when things aren't quite right I've found the instructions and LED indicator system hard to get to grips with. I was interested that the new one has been revised, with better charging programs and "Less confusing display". Well for me it's still confusing. My battery has (had) issues, but it was really difficult to work out what the LEDs were actually telling me, and the instructions are as clear as mud! After a while I gave up on the Optimate telling me whether my old battery was recoverable or not and replaced it. **Now** the optimate is of course perfect, it has a new battery to work with, it shows lots of green lights and my battery charging world is full of smiles. I just wonder whether it's actually doing anything to protect my nice shiny new battery that continued regular use wouldn't do just as well?
So bottom line... I think it's a good bit of kit and does the job it's supposed to do, but why does it have to be so complicated for the end user? One star docked for poor instructions and confusing LEDs.

The frame bungs are a practical way of stopping the crud & enhancing the bike.
The can abus optimate charger is brilliant, just plug in & hook up to the bikes power point & let it regulate & look after your battery.
The optimate extension lead let's you leave your bike in what would have been an inaccessible position had you not had this extension lead & just makes life easier & gives you more options of where you can put your bike .

I've used Optimate chargers to keep bike batteries in top shape for at least 20 years, but this is my first experience with a Can Bus system, and this charger works perfectly straight out of the box.
