Reviews of Wunderlich black tool box with code-able lock (left side fitment) R1200GS LC/Adv, R1250GS/Adv. (does not fit with huggers or BMW splash guard)

Good but a right pain to fit. GSAkev on Mar 29, 2024

Wunderlich have been doing some cost cutting/profit making changes I think. They used to be 2 bolts pre mounted in the rear of the mounting plate. These and the what was front large torx bolt are no longer there. Instead there's 3 lose coach type bolts, all of which require supplied white grease applied to the back of the heads. This and having to try and balance the backing plate and mounting bracket. While trying to keep the bolts located in the squared hole, the washers and put on the nuts, getting your fingers covered in white grease is a right faff! You've also got to either mount the tool box to the plate first, which make fitting harder. Or angle the plate with one mounting bracket fitted to unable you to get the toolbox mounting screws in. You can't get them in once the plate is mounted. Wunderlich this should and could be better as could the very poor instructions especially the lock coding.

Expensive, fiddly but good. Martin Evans on Aug 14, 2023

I've seen some of the cheaper offerings and this is definitely waaay better than them but still, it definitely ain't cheap! I found it quite fiddly to fit (might have been easier with an assistant) and had to take a couple of attempts as the instructions weren't entirely clear with regards to the lock, setting it up to your key and the fitting of it to the toolbox door. I also ended-up ordering a smaller number plate as I was struggling to gain easy access to the toolbox once fitted with my size 10 hands; no way could I get into it with gloved hands! I'm going to call it 'the desperate box'; I only intend getting anything out of there if I'm desperate!! It's fine now it's on but it cost me much more time than I expected, scraped knuckles and a new number plate!! ££ NN Says Sorry you had issues - the number plate one is a first for us on this problem. fitting it is probably a two person job.

Impression straight out of the box is good. Well built and finished. The mounting frame works well but is fiddly to mount with awkward access to a couple of the nuts and bolts. Claims of a greater volume than the Touratech option are negligible, tbh, having now used both. The reasons I switched to the Wunderlich box are the key-able lock and the claims of being waterproof, which the Touratech is definitely not! I haven't had the Wunderlich out in the wet to test it properly yet but will update once I have.

Great toolbox with more room than some of the other tool boxes available. Well made sturdy blown plastic construction with a metal frame that fixes to the pannier rails of a GS adventure. I have to one with codeable locks so can use ignition key to open. No leaks up to press despite being in biblical rain. Very straight forward installation and fits with Bumot Panniers.

Again great service, value, choice of parts and quick delivery from Nippy Normans. This is a quality part that was easy to assemble and fit, and looks great on the bike. The code-able lock is a super feature so no extra keys to lose!

The Wunderlich toolbox is well made and seems rugged, it looks good on the bike and is big enough for my tools etc. I referred to YouTube to see a recommended method of fitting which was very helpful. I bought the toolbox with the coded key lock option and the internal bag to reassure me that all will remain waterproof. Spot on service from Nippy Norman, as usual.

opted for this one rather than the cheaper options about. This unit has a better build quality and fixing to the luggage frame is with a additional plate/mount. Nice lid that pulls in tight when locked . Only negative comments the lid if a bit fiddly if you have the standard size number plate fitted but it's only used in emergency so not a issue I don't think I would bother with the bag if purchased again .

Good unit and nice and solid once mounted - wunderlich German instructions are not especially clear however the American arm has done some great videos with English commentary which made coding the lock an absolute doddle.

The lock came pre-coded to the keys supplied, not as a kit as it shows in the video. Consequently you do not get a full range of the little levers and you have to figure out how to dismantle the whole lock. Then there is the door - it is too small. If you fill the inner bag with a small toolkit, puncture repair kit and a tiny compressor - it will fit in the box - but you cant get it in and out through the door. - brilliant design. Then there is the "weatherproof" lock cover that doesn't fit too well and comes off. Overall - not impressed. NN SAYS We are taking the tool bag back from the customer. CUSTOMER ALSO SAID: Thanks for the offer I appreciate the thought. I have looked at the alternatives and they are as bad, the only ones that don't suffer from this are the tube type that you can insert a tool roll into. I've taken all the tools out of the bag and stuffed them in separately, just means you have to pull everything out out to get to something at the back, which is not ideal. As an engineer I can see why they have adopted this bird box design but it does compromise the utility of the product.

It certainly well made and fits really well. It is a bit of a faf to fit and you really need 3 arms to do it but once on its rock solid and I love the fact it is keyed to my oem key. It's pricey but worth it

Good bit of kit. Like the fact you can match the key...which I did achieve quite easily. Had to drill out some of the holes to make the bracket fit though, and it was awkward to bolt on without another pair of hands! Overall, a worthwhile purchase.

Arrived in two boxes - one with the tool box itself, the other with the frame and mounting hardware. The frame could have been better packaged as it was simply put in the box with no additional protection and having been clearly rattling around, some of the crackle back finish had come off showing the bare metal underneath on one edge. Take note - Wunderlich! Assembly of the lock is simple following the various tutorials on Youtube and the instructions supplied. An extra hand would be useful when fitting the box and frame to the bike. Once on looks OEM - secure and well finished. Ideal for storage of puncture kit, first aid kit and some tools.

Looks factory when fitted to the bike. Take your time when setting up the key and get some graphite powder / Dry Moly lube for the lock. Fitting to the bike is fiddly on your own as you need to get the front connector onto the pannier frame before you bolt the case to the support frame. Really nice little case and it fits my tools, first aid kit, tyre pump and repair kit.

Supplied this by NN in the code-able version. The box is good quality both in moulding/lock features and bracket construction. The 4.5 litre size is huge and a good additional purchase would be the fitted bag to go with it. You may want to watch the video I made for my YouTube channel that covers unboxing, coding the lock to use your BMW key and fitting it to my BMW R1250GS Adventure, with Bumot Panniers (yes it's a push but they do fit).
